It took six months for Lulla and Ashutosh to get the costumes ready which included researching the fabric and colours, designing, the making of the costumes and then of course loads of trials for the entire cast. We went to Jaipur to sourse the fabrics and the colour schemes to suit that time period,” says Lulla. We did refer to a lot of paintings of that era along with a lot of theory. I did read this one particular book to go through Akbar’s life history and the events. Obviously, a lot of research went into it and Ashutosh had done a lot of detailed research for costuming and garments which he passed down to me. “Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film was too good an offer to refuse. Lulla who has for the first time designed the clothes for the entire cast of a period film is thrilled at the unique opportunity she got as costume designer for Jodha Akbar.
